Job Description

Technology For All is implementing partner of Project Hello World. Project Hello World is a tech solution to a global crisis. We have worked with engineers and developers over the last 5 years to establish a product which we believe is designed to best reach the greatest number of children with a quality education, and we gather feedback and outcomes data constantly so we’re sure this remains the case.

This role will need to have a flexible focus - at times looking locally, at others taking an international birds-eye view. You’ll need versatility, adaptability and speed!

Responsibilities

The Tech Lead will take the lead role in the execution of the following responsibilities;

  • Managing the planning and delivery of our Hello Hub building program - working with suppliers, shippers, customs, in-country partners and communities to order, pack, ship, build and teach Hubs. We’ll also need this person to negotiate prices and find free/low-cost suppliers.
  • Monitoring usage and status of the Hubs - making sure that all the Hubs are online, with power and functioning as they ought to. This could be on-the-ground fixes if you’re local, or it can be support for teams in other countries if not.
  • 3. Managing in-country tech - supporting the very junior people who manage Hubs day-to-day in their communities to maintain the Hello Hubs.
  • 4. Design and improve - as we get feedback - the tech lead will design and support the collection of key data (usage, learning, user feedback etc) via the Hubs and make sure our design changes to better meet user needs. This is about hardware and software - so our key app partnerships will involve you too.
  • 5. On-site management of Hub building - when we’re in community, the tech lead is in charge of managing the assembly of the Hubs with the community at the helm. We need someone who can teach and step back and let people learn and take ownership - sometimes with no shared language.

What We’re Looking For;

The key skills we’re looking for are:

1. A versatile engineer who can wear a lot of hats:

  • Purchasing, packing, manufacturing and Shipping Hub kits.
  • Remote site deployment and troubleshooting.
  • Teaching and training of communities (patient with positive attitude).
  • Innovation design iteration and system improvement.
  • Working with partner organisations - software and hardware.
  • Maintaining hub communication to assist in maintenance and troubleshooting.

2. A leader of tech in our organisation - as we transition to in-house tech, this person will be responsible for making sure our strategic plans are viable and for leading on the sourcing of low-cost, quality materials to enable scaling.

3. As a teacher, we’re looking for you to train-up people who have no experience of tech or connectivity, or power in many cases. This takes a great deal of patience and a willingness to go slow.

4.  As a manager you’ll be looking after the pastoral and career development of junior tech engineers working in-country. They’ll need support getting started and working out how best to manage the tech needs of their Hub communities.

5. Willing to travel, on a shoestring budget - a great deal of this work will take place in Nepal, but work will also take place in Uganda and possibly further afield. You’ll need to be away for large chunks of time. The people we work with have extremely hard lives and we work together with them as equal partners and peers. We eat together and we don’t stay in luxury hotels.

6. Close working with project and head office team - we’re a fast moving organisation with a number of key players both in London and you’ll be involved in a wide range of projects and tasks as we grow.

Person specification

We’re looking for someone who can get their sleeves rolled up and their hands dirty. Someone who is kept up at night trying to find answers to the world's most intractable

problems and willing to make some errors along the way. We need people willing to share what they know and learn as they go - not afraid to take a step back and think around a problem. We’re looking for an expert with drive and heart. And we need someone who can do all those things, in some of the hardest places in the world, and still have a lot of fun. Here are some of the main skills you’ll need to have:

  • Fast learner who can self-manage.
  • Works on schedule.
  • Follows emerging technology.
  • Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts.
  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project.
  • Is friendly, confident, and patient with others.
  • Is willing to teach, adults and children, often with no technology experience or literacy at all.
  • Has 3+ years of experience.
  • Keen to find local and sustainable sourcing options for kit.
  • CRB checked to work with children (or willing to start the process).
  • Is handy and can mix concrete to lay a foundation for the Hub, knock up a frame, and innovate on the spot with resources available.
